(Previous) Current Status

I’ve tried to get into the habit of doing making notes on what I’ve accomplished on the project during the month. Here are the ones written prior to the start of this blog:

Current Status:
April

• Writing for the first three days continues. Didn’t realize just how big this section of the game was going to be until I started putting it together.
• Finally started putting the story into the game engine. Hopefully having actual, playable portions of the game will make me feel like I’m accomplishing something.
• Getting dangerously close to having to work on the “hard” part of the game, where the linear structure of the beginning will start giving way to semi-random scenes that rely on things like player statistics and choices. I’ve got a lot of ideas, but I’m not sure how they’re going to work out.
• Putting the stuff I’ve written into the engine, and making some more backgrounds to go with it.
• Made some placeholder sprites.
• Fought with the studio software I use for the characters. Had to reinstall it in order to fix the issues I was having.
• Made a bunch of CGs. Probably the most fun of the whole game so far. Makes me worry about the ultimate file size, though…

NOTES:
Working on this project has really increased my esteem for the game creators here. I’ve been shocked to discover how long it actually takes me to write just a scene or two, so it’s amazing to see games out there with so much content.

Current Status:
March 2016

• Revised intro scripts.
• Wrote script drafts for a lot of events on days 1, 2 and 3.
• Thanks to some freeform writing spiraling out of control, the game now has it’s first sex scene, a new minor character (who might be a bit of an easter egg) and a scene where you get to discuss boobs. Good times.
• Busy with a lot of RL concerns, so not a lot of progress this time around. (No writing, at least.)
• Created a really cool game start animation of awesomeness (if I say so myself).
• Figured out the most of the technical issues for the first character creation menu. Made some progress on the second as well.

Current Status:
February 2016

• Fleshing out the concept more, and figuring out which of my initial ideas still fit, and which ones need to go.
• Characters are starting to take shape. Many of them now have designs.
• Wrote scripts for the intro, arrival at the island, and portions of the first few days.
• Figured out how to get high resolution screen caps from the poser I’m using for the characters (thanks, nVidia drivers!). Figured out a method for masking them.
• Ran into a limitation with the poser that’s given me some hard choices to make on what can be done with the player avatar. A lot of my initial ideas (like skin tanning over the course of the game) look like they may take a considerable chunk of time and energy that could be better spent on other content.
• Done initial setup in the game engine. Customized the main text window and player choice buttons. Tried out some test character sprites and backgrounds.

Current Status:
January 2016

• Figuring out general story idea and characters.
• Writing some script rough drafts to get a feel for the game.
• Researching and experimenting with methods for making characters and backgrounds with only minimal art skills.
